A parent of a young child passed along a comment to us upon hearing a facility like the OceanEXP might be built on Vancouver Island,
“I want my kids to live the life they can imagine; is there any reason it should not be built?”
The intent of the OceanEXP project is prove to the world that if an individual can witness first- hand the beauty, wonder and vulnerability of an ecosystem like the ocean realm, they will make a strong commitment to preserving it. Canada’s Centre for Ocean Exploration is designed to provide an immersive experience equal to, if not more impressive than actually diving into the ocean.
The project was launched locally and the proof of concept developed in a west coast community, however we are proud to announce this has become a Canada-wide endeavour. We have recently completed a successful stakeholder engagement campaign involving the our local provincial and federal members of parliament, the City of Nanaimo, the school district, and of course the Snuneymuxw First Nation who identified our initiative as “an opportunity to continue to champion reconciliation by collaborating together on issues as important as ocean sustainability, education and economic development.
Subsequent to completing an intensive Economic Feasibility Study, the Nanaimo Deep Discovery Association has sponsored a Royal Roads University graduate student to conduct an in-depth qualitative research study that will look further into the direct and indirect impact our initiative will have on our community’s economic development. As this study unfolds, we will continue to work with our community partners in facilitating what we believe will be the key to not only re-igniting the economic drivers of our community like tourism, but creating a world class virtual environment of learning. We look forward to helping lead Canada out of this recent set back caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, and evolve into a stronger healthier community.
As our initiative moves forward the NDDA is looking to expand and involve more people to work on this special project. This is a community initiative and welcome members of the community to get involved.
Please stay safe in these uncertain times.
