Board Members from the NDDA were excited about the opportunity to update Sheila Malcolmson, MLA Nanaimo, on the progress made with the OceanEXP Centre project. Sheila was just recently appointed special advisor on marine debris protection. As Canada’s Centre for Ocean Exploration, the NDDA’s endeavour presents a unique and iconic opportunity to promote Ocean awareness, education and research.
Prior to her election as an MLA, Sheila was elected as the MP for Nanaimo-Ladysmith and four times to the Islands Trust Council, serving six of those years as Chair of the Islands Trust Council, where she championed fair ferry service, marine safety and oil spill prevention. She signed a government-to-government protocol between the Snuneymuxw First Nation and the Islands Trust – establishing a relationship of respect and cooperation in planning, land use management and heritage conservation. Sheila is known for bringing people from different backgrounds together to work for a common cause: workers, small businesses, First Nations, community groups, and students.
The NDDA was grateful for the opportunity to speak with Sheila today and value the input she provided.
